Trickly

Lesson 2 of 5

SHORTCUT

का, की, के — agreeing with what comes after

It matches the thing being owned, never the owner.

The question

___ , or ?

The trick

/ / agrees with the thing being possessed, not the person possessing it. Look forward, never backward.

Worked example

  1. 1Thing owned is masculine singular → :
  2. 2Thing owned is feminine → :
  3. 3Thing owned is masculine plural → :

So: , because is feminine

Remember it like this

Look forward, not backward. Cover the owner's name with your thumb and just ask: what am I talking about, and is it masculine or feminine?

In the exam

The trap examiners set is a female owner with a masculine possession: — not , because is masculine. If you find yourself looking at the name, you are looking the wrong way.

Why it works

behaves like an adjective, and adjectives in Hindi agree with the noun they describe. The owner's own gender is simply not part of the equation.
